Will simulating night time persuade crickets to leave their shelters?

While observing crickets and learning about their behavior from a University of Arizona scientist, our class of 5th graders noticed that the crickets oftentimes stayed inside of their shelters. We learned that crickets hunt at night so this made us wonder if we could persuade the crickets to come out of their shelters to hunt by making our room dark to seem like it was night time.
What a thoughtful class project! Even though the crickets didn’t do what you expected, you came up with some brilliant reasons why—like the idea that they might just have “shy personalities.” Learning that one variable (light) isn’t the only thing that affects behavior is a huge step in scientific thinking!
