Which Type of Bat Hits Farther? Metal vs. Wood

I love playing baseball! Ever since I started playing, I’ve been curious about how the equipment we use can change the game. Turns out baseball is full of science. The purpose of my science project is to see which type of baseball bat hits the farthest. My hypothesis is that I think the metal bat will hit the farthest, because it is made of a stronger material and it is lighter than wood. I hit nine baseballs with each bat and measured the distance that each ball traveled. My results were that the wood bat hit an average of 109 feet and the metal bat hit an average of 124 feet. That’s a big difference! My results showed that the metal bat really did hit the ball farther. This project helped me see how science and sports work together — and it made me even more excited about both baseball and experimenting!

  1. Good to see that your hypothesis was correct. I am glad to see that you used a tee rather than have someone through the ball (would lead to inconsistent hitting). Do you plan any future experiments (different ball, different types of bats, etc.)?
