1. What is your project about? Our project was about the process of which horse feed molds. 1. Why did you choose this project? We chose this project because we were interested in how the process of molding works and since we both love and ride horses, we did it to horse feed. 1. What was your result/ overall conclusion? We thought that African Alfalfa would grow the least amount of mold, but in the end, it actually grew the most mold with 56.7% mold coverage and the one that had the least amount of mold coverage was the Bermuda hay pellets with 1.88%. We also thought that the Sweet feed would grow the most mold, but it came in second on our charts. 1. Why is your project important? Our project is important because some farmers don’t know how easily horse feed and hay can mold, and because of this horses are becoming affected because of these problems.
I great up on an alfalfa farm in Nevada. Mold was always a concern for us, as we bailed one ton cubes and it was high protein for the dairy farmers in California. I have seen hay that was bailed to wet cause fire in a stack before. Moisture content and heat are very important when you are creating a nutrition plan for livestock. Excellent work recognizing the importance of quality feed.
