What material blocks sound the best?

In this project I am studying potential sound barrier materials by comparing five different materials (fabric, wood, styrofoam, tile, and carpet made from artificial grass) to see which one can block sound the best. I see fabric curtains and wooden walls used to stop sound but other items that are used in house improvement projects don’t really consider sound like putting in new tile or carpet (like artificial grass) for your floor My setup involved a cube like structure with a source of sound placed inside it. I used three types of sound (rain/ crickets chirping and air conditioner) with each material shaped like a cube. I measured the sound using a decibel meter outside 4 faces of each cube and averaged them to find the sound that escaped through. In the end, artificial grass blocked sound the most. In the end, carpet made from artificial grass proved to be the most effective sound barrier while fabric was the least effective. Energy from sound absorption could result in heat and this energy can be used for other purposes.

Great job testing which materials block sound the best. I really like how you measured decibels carefully and used a detailed lab notebook to record your results. Your project shows excellent scientific thinking and careful research, good work our young scientist or engineer
Great project with real life application of ways to reduce noise pollution.
Incredible work! I love how detailed your research is and how you took so many possible variables into account.
Awesome project, Troy! I am so proud of you. I was so impressed with your graphics and presentation of your project. I can tell that you but a lot of thought into your topic. I am curious if you were thinking about your project during the MIM field trip a few weeks ago. Awesome topic for research and wonderful project to share with us! -Mrs. Nicolarsen
Thank you for the effort you put into this project. You did a good job comparing different materials to see how well they block sound. Your testing approach and observations were clearly explained. Nice work.
Great work!
