My science fair, Toothbrush Tryouts, is about if an electric or manual toothbrush cleans more plaque off teeth. I choose this project because I have an electric toothbrush and I want to make sure im cleaning my teeth the best I can. My conclusion to my science fair is that electric toothbrushes do slightly better at cleaning plaque off of teeth. My project is important because teeth are important and so we want to keep them clean and plaque free.

This project asks a practical question that many households think about when choosing cleaning products. The use of petri dishes and bacterial colonies makes the investigation feel very scientific because the results are based on visible evidence rather than just opinion. It was interesting to see that the homemade cleaner showed fewer colonies, especially since the original expectation was that the chemical cleaner would perform better. The explanation connecting vinegar and citrus acids to cleaning properties was also helpful for understanding why the homemade mixture might work. One improvement could be to test additional brands of chemical cleaners or repeat the trials to see if the same pattern appears again. This study does a nice job connecting microbiology with real life choices people make in their homes.
