The Great Pumpkin Decay Race

This project is about the decay rates of different colored pumpkins. We tested a green striped pumpkin and an orange pumpkin. We chose this project because Halloween and fall were coming up when we started our project. We found that an orange pumpkin decomposes faster than a green striped pumpkin. This project was important because it helps students understand how living things change over time and how nature breaks down organisms to reuse them.

Wonderful job on your pumpkin project! You asked a creative science question and did a great job observing your pumpkins over time. I liked how you measured them each week and used your results to answer your question. Your project was organized, thoughtful, and showed strong curiosity about how decomposition works. You worked hard and showed great science skills. Keep up the great work!
Nice job! Now I know not to leave my pumpkin out for too long! Or, I may need to consider switching to a different color pumpkin. I enjoyed seeing the drawings of your observations!
How fun! I’m always surprised how quickly my jack-o-lantern decomposes after carving. It would be fun to run this experiment again with uncarved pumpkins too.
