Space Rocks And Shockwaves- What Makes A Bigger Boom?

I am doing this experiment because I am interested in moon craters and physics. My experiment tested how shape, drop height, and mass impacted the artificial moon. My hypothesis was that bigger size, weight, and drop height of a meteorite will increase the size of the impact crater. I did three experiments with one keeping drop height and size the same with the variable being the weight. In two other experiments I varied the drop height and the shape. After doing each combination three times, we measured the crater depth and crater diameter and then averaged it and graphed it. The results concluded that my hypothesis was right showing that the higher dropped bigger and heavier meteors made bigger craters.

  2. Very good experiment. While I have seen this activity before, the idea of similar size but different weights is something I had not seen before. Do you plan on doing more experiments next year. Do you think that the speed that you dropped the balls compared to the speed of a real meteorite makes a difference?
