Science Project: What Floats and What Sinks?

During water play in our classroom, the children began noticing that some objects stayed on top of the water while others sank to the bottom. They asked questions like, “Why does the rock go down?” and “Why does the leaf stay up?” Their curiosity grew as they started testing classroom items on their own and making predictions before dropping them in. Because of their natural interest and excitement, we decided to turn their questions into a science investigation. For our project, we are exploring what makes objects sink or float by observing, predicting, testing, and recording our results. This project allows students to practice scientific thinking skills such as asking questions, making hypotheses, conducting experiments, and discussing patterns they notice.
