Rinse and Reuse

The purpose of this experiment was to reduce the amount of bottles that need to be recycled. The independent variable is the soda used and the dependent variable is the amount of bacteria measured. My experimental procedures were to drink the sodas, let them sit for three days. Make a mixture of water and cleaning products, shake ten times, pour out, swab inside and outside. Incubate for two weeks, measure bacteria. The sample included ten Coke bottles. The manipulated variable was cleaning the bottle. The bottle responding variable was the surface area of bacteria. To measure the responding variable I counted the colonies of bacteria. The results of the experiment were that bleach had the least amount of total bacteria and hydrogen peroxide had the most total bacteria. Some of the errors were that hydrogen 1 and 2 may have been contaminated. My hypothesis was not supported. My findings should be useful for cleaning bottles for reuse. In the future I would use a more precise way to measure the bacteria.

  1. You did a great job, especially labeling the graph, identifying some variables and the number of trials for each bottle treatment.

  2. You did a good job testing different cleaners in the same way and counting bacteria colonies. Your table and graph make your results easy to understand.
