Quantitative framework of Redundant and Unique Metabolic Capabilities of Various Organisms Residing in Human Microbiomes

Human microbiomes contain diverse microbial communities that perform essential metabolic functions for host health. It remains unclear which of these functions are shared across body sites and which are specialized for particular environments. This study develops a quantitative framework to compare the redundant and unique metabolic capabilities of microorganisms in the human gut, skin, and oral microbiomes using publicly available MGnify genomes and KEGG functional annotations. Representative bacterial species from each microbiome were functionally profiled and analyzed using principal component analysis (PCA) to identify similarities in metabolic potential for all bacterial species, followed by Venn comparisons to determine shared and niche-specific pathways through KEGG modules.
