Let the Good Times Roll! A Preschool Study of Cars, Inclines and Distance

In this project, students explored which ramp height helped cars go furthest on the tile floor. This project was chosen because students enjoyed building and playing with ramps during free choice time during a simple machines unit, and students wanted to continue to explore ramps even after the unit was over. Cars placed at a 12 inch ramp height went the furthest across all four trials, and cars placed at the tallest ramp height went the shortest distance across all four trials. This project is important because it provided our preschool students with an opportunity to use the scientific method to explore and collect data about cars and inclined planes.
