Project Dough Balls: What sweetener makes the best cookie

The main idea of my project is to find out what sweeteners in cookies makes them the cookies we eat. I had 6 sweeteners; cane sugar, brown sugar, honey, molasses, maple syrup, and an artificial sweetener.. My hypothesis was that the liquid sweeteners would be softer and the normal more powdery ones would taste better and react in a more predictable manner. I found that the liquid cookies were softer but surprisingly the artificial sweetener converged upward instead of spreading.

  1. Interesting project! You did a great job capturing the results of each trial. I specifically appreciated that you had both quantitative (size and color) and qualitative (taste) results for each of the sweeteners you used. I’m curious what you think the ideal sugar cookie is now that you’ve done this experiment? Are there opportunities to combine different amounts of different sweeteners to see how that changes the results?

  2. I love that you explored different sweeteners and able to display pictures, however, you didn’t state which of them had a better taste. Good job overall!

  3. You did such a great job choosing a fun project and testing six different sweeteners. Your steps were clear, and I like that you included photos and references. Your results were interesting too, especially the artificial sweetener cookie rising more than spreading.

  4. Great data collection methods! The pictures were very helpful and you did a great job describing your results.
