Desert Plants to the Rescue! (Building a DIY 3D Water Filter to Clean Dirty Water)

Clean water was very important for health and daily life. Sometimes water looked cloudy because it contained small dirt particles. This cloudiness was called turbidity. In this project, we wanted to find out if desert plants like cactus and moringa seeds could help clean dirty water using a DIY 3D water filter. We built our filter using layers of gravel, pebbles, dried moringa seeds, dried cactus material, activated charcoal, and cotton. We prepared dirty water by mixing soil with water and measured its turbidity before filtration. Then, we poured the water through our filter several times and measured the turbidity after each pass. Our results showed that the dirty water had an average turbidity of 35.47 NTU, which meant it was very cloudy. After filtration, turbidity decreased each time the water passed through the filter. The sixth filtration pass showed the highest turbidity reduction at 82.54%, making it the most effective result. This meant the water became much clearer after repeated filtration. Our findings showed that cactus and moringa seeds, which grow naturally in Yuma, had strong potential as natural and low-cost materials for water filtration.
