Pop Science: A Sweet Temperature Experiment

Energy and Change

Grade:
2
Teacher:
Lindsay Wong,Andrea Klein

Science time has been full of sweet discoveries this year! Our 2nd & 5th grade buddy classes enjoyed working together while having a fun treat— the Tootsie Pop! While we were licking our pops, we started asking: how many licks does it really take to get to the center of a Tootsie Roll Tootsie Pop? Then we got even more curious. We wondered about summer temperatures versus winter temperatures. On a super hot day, does a lollipop take fewer licks to get to the center? Does the freezing cold make it last longer? Or could it actually be the other way around? That’s when our big science question was born! Could temperature change how many licks it takes to reach the center? Our second grade class is put this sweet mystery to the test with the help of our fifth grade buddies! We are investigating how many licks it takes to reach the Tootsie Roll center of a Tootsie Pop — and whether temperature makes a difference!

  1. Great job on your project! You asked a fun and creative science question and connected it to temperature in a very interesting way. I liked how you turned a sweet treat into a real science investigation. Your project showed curiosity, teamwork, and excitement about learning. Keep up the wonderful work asking questions and exploring science in creative ways!

  2. I am particularly impressed with how you’ve laid out your data. The graphs are so nice to look at and easy to read and interpret. You’ve made some thoughtful comments, too, about potential flaws in the procedure and how you’ve mitigated them like the strategy to calculate an average over many students. Great job! “More science” indeed!
