Playground Engineers - Designing a Better Recess!
Human Health and Behavior- Grade:
- 2
- Teacher:
- Liza Hutchins Jonelle Richardson
Our second graders became engineers and created their own playground games. First, we asked students to rate how much they liked recess. Then, they worked in teams to design and build new games using their ideas and problem-solving skills. After we played the new games, students rated recess again. The ratings showed that most students enjoyed recess more after playing the games they created. This project helped us learn about teamwork, creativity, and how engineering can make things better.

Wonderful job on your project! You found a real problem on your playground and came up with a creative way to make recess more fun. I like how you used your ideas, teamwork, and imagination to design games for other students to enjoy. Your project showed problem-solving, caring, and creativity. You did a great job thinking about how to improve your school. Keep up the awesome work!
Nice job on taking responsibility for your fun and learning experience! Way to think like problem solvers and scientists!
This is a very strong human-centered engineering project. The use of surveys, redesign cycles, community testing, and honest interpretation of mixed results demonstrates high-level thinking. The creativity and authentic problem-solving elevate it above many typical elementary projects.
I love how you’ve taken ownership and responsibility for your own fun at recess. Measuring “fun” is always tricky and I admire how you’ve investigated it in this project.
