An animal's environment plays a significant role in establishing appropriate social behaviors from birth to maturity. Shelters nationwide put animals in captive enclosures, unawarely forcing them to endure overwhelming conditions with stressful stimuli that may damage social development as well as general welfare. On the contrary, cat cafes and dog parks have gained more recognition, as the environments promote a stable, free-roaming atmosphere, encouraging positive responses to socialization among conspecifics and humans. Through this research we hope to understand how environmental factors contribute to the behaviors of dogs (Canis familiaris) and cats (Felis catus) with humans.
