Which will help more effectively, chewing gum, cutting the onion near water, or freezing/chilling the onion first? I think chewing gum will help prevent my mom from crying because when you breathe outward the flavor of the gum might combine with the chemicals in the onion and prevent them from getting into eyes.

  1. Great job choosing a practical and interesting food science question. I like that you compared different ways to reduce tears when cutting onions. Keep exploring and experimenting!

  2. Great job choosing a real-world problem and testing different ways to reduce tears when cutting onions. I liked that you compared several methods, repeated your tests, and included a data table and science journal. Your project shows curiosity, careful effort, and honest reporting of results. Nice work thinking about what could affect the experiment too.

  3. What a creative and thoughtful experiment! 🧅 I love that you tested different methods: chewing gum, cutting near water, and chilling the onion, to see which one really works best. Comparing multiple strategies shows strong scientific thinking.

It’s especially impressive that you made a clear prediction about chewing gum and explained your reasoning about how it might interact with the onion’s chemicals. That shows you were thinking carefully about cause and effect, not just guessing.

Projects like this are great because they explore everyday problems in a scientific way. Keep asking “why does this happen?” and testing your ideas. You’re doing exactly what scientists do!
