1. What is your project about? My project is about finding a more environmentally and physically friendly nail polish remover rather than acetone. Using four different types of removers, acetone, methyl acetate, mineral and soy based, I tested which remover had the least amount of strokes to get the nail polish off and to see if there is an alternative to acetone. 1. Why did you choose this project? I chose this project because it seemed very interesting and I paint my nails sometimes, so it’s nice to know what's good for your skin. I also chose this project because when I go to the nail salon, the nail techs use acetone and it makes my skin very dry. So, I tested 4 different types of nail polish removers to see which one is as efficient to acetone but in an environmentally friendly way. 1. What was your result/ overall conclusion? My results showed that the mineral nail polish remover had the second least amount of strokes and was almost as efficient and effective as Acetone had the least amount of strokes. In my hypothesis, it says that, “if there is an equally effective alternative to Acetone. Then it should be used instead of acetone. Because you can achieve the same result using a product that is much less harmful for the environment and your skin.” My hypothesis was rejected because none of the other alternative materials were exactly efficient to acetone. 1. Why is your project important? My project is important because it shows that there is an alternative nail polish remover that is almost as effective as acetone. This helps people in the future know that mineral based remover is the easiest, fastest, and most importantly non-toxic to humans. This also helps people know what nail polish remover to use when taking off your nail polish! Lastly, my project shows that mineral nail polish remover is not as efficient as acetone but it is more healthy and uses gentler solvents on your skin.
Your data collection was consistent, and your averages and graph helped clearly support your conclusion. I also appreciated that you acknowledged the limitations in your experiment and considered how cotton pad saturation and nail material loss might impact the results. While acetone was still the most efficient, you thoughtfully interpreted that mineral-based remover may be the best balance between effectiveness and environmental safety. This is a very strong project that shows maturity in experimental design and analysis. Excellent work.
The title “Nailed It!” is creative and engaging and immediately drew my attention to the project. I enjoyed seeing how you compared different nail polish removers using clear testing and measurable data. Your graphs and explanations made the results easy to understand, and it was great that you considered both effectiveness and environmental impact in your conclusions. Excellent work showing thoughtful scientific investigation and curiosity. Keep up the great work!
