La Flor, el Cactus y el Aceite: Developing a Natural Sunscreen Using Cempasúchil

This research explores the development of a bio sunscreen formulated from Cempasúchil and Nopales to provide a safe alternative to synthetic UV filters. While traditional sunscreens often use chemicals like oxybenzone, natural extracts offer a combination of UV protection and antibacterial benefits. This study investigates if this bio sunscreen can effectively shield skin from radiation while slow bacterial growth, applied the antioxidant properties of Mexican marigold and the protective seal of cactus to create a stable, eco-friendly dermatological solution. The methods involved a multi-stage extraction and mixing process. Dehydrated Cempasúchil flowers were squashed for seven days, while Nopales were heated at 22°C to obtain a filtered liquid extract. These extracts were combine using a rotary evaporator and combined with shea butter, Tacuma butter, jojoba oil, and Vitamin E. The mixture was combining in a warm bath to create a homogeneous oil phase, then incubated for several days until it reached a viscous consistency. This process ensured that the bio sunscreen keeps the bioactive compounds necessary for skin protection. To determine efficacy, the bio sunscreen was subjected to testing using a UV light source and calibrated sensors. Results indicate that the formulation significantly reduces UV exposure compared to untreated skin, confirming its role as a functional barrier. Furthermore, the antimicrobial properties of the marigold extract successfully decreased bacterial expansion on the skin surface. These findings suggest that the bio sunscreen is a viable natural alternative that provides dual protection against radiation and microbial growth, meeting the growing demand for eco-friendly and health-conscious skincare.
