This project delves into the effects of different substances on eggshells. More specifically, how quickly certain liquids decay the chemical present in eggshells and tooth enamel. Our tooth enamel is made of multiple different components: calcium phosphate (hydroxyapatite) & carbonate. While they’re not identical, eggshells and human tooth enamel are similar chemically; both substances include chemicals weak to acid reactions. When an acidic compound comes into contact with calcium carbonate, the reaction triggered breaks down the structure, releasing carbon dioxide gas and weakening the surface. Because of our modern diets, erosive liquids like soda destroy the strength of our teeth faster than any other time in history. The main purpose of this experiment is to determine the hidden damages caused by these drinks & liquids. When one begins to understand the risks involved in consuming these everyday liquids & how to better clean their teeth, they can begin to live a healthier lifestyle.

Very facinating and practical work.
