From Kitchen to Garden: Investigating Which Rice Water Promotes the Healthiest Pinto Beans (Phaseolus vulgaris)

This experiment tested how different types of rice rinse water affected the growth of pinto beans (Phaseolus vulgaris). The treatments included white rice water, brown rice water, basmati rice water, and distilled water as the control. Plant growth was measured using plant height (cm), leaf color rating, leaf color using a colorimeter, and germination rate. The null hypothesis stated that there would be no difference in growth among the water types, while the alternative hypothesis stated that the type of water would affect pinto bean growth. The results showed that pinto beans watered with distilled water grew the tallest, with an average height of 21.78 cm. Brown rice water produced moderate plant height (13.72 cm) and healthy leaf development. White rice water produced the darkest green leaves based on the visual leaf color rating. In contrast, basmati rice water resulted in the lowest growth and germination, with most seeds failing to sprout or develop leaves. These findings supported the alternative hypothesis because the different water types produced noticeable differences in plant height, leaf color, and germination. Overall, the experiment showed that rice rinse water can influence plant growth, especially brown and white rice water. However, distilled water still produced the tallest plants. This study suggests that leftover rice water may be a useful and natural option for supporting plant health, depending on the type of rice used.
