We used the floor to help us with math in our classroom instead of a whiteboard, having no idea that the floor had been newly waxed with the product I-Shine, but mistakes happen, and we learned from it. In this experiment, we tested different cleaning products to see which ones removed the Expo marker most effectively, without damaging the wax on our floor. Dry-erase markers contain pigments, solvents, and polymers that allow the ink to stick to surfaces, but also be easily wiped off a smooth surface like a whiteboard. Our tile with floor wax is not completely smooth, therefore making it hard to remove, especially on spots with extra wax, making it uneven. We need to find how to fix this problem, safely, for us and the world.

This project did an excellent job addressing a real classroom problem in a smart and creative way. The students clearly explained their research question and carefully tested a variety of cleaning products using safe procedures. Their testing was consistent, with results recorded at one, three, and five minutes. The project demonstrated strong learning about chemistry and included thoughtful consideration of environmental safety, showing deep understanding.
