Our project, “Dog Olfactory Preferences: A Comparison of Reactions to Different Smells,” explores which scents dogs prefer when given a choice between beef, chicken, and blueberries. We chose this project because dogs rely strongly on their sense of smell, and we wanted to better understand how different scents affect their behavior and food preferences. During our seven-day experiment, we recorded which smell the dog chose first each day. The results showed that beef was chosen five times, chicken two times, and blueberries zero times, meaning the dog clearly preferred the strong meat-based smell of beef. Our overall conclusion is that dogs are more attracted to strong protein scents, and our hypothesis was not supported because chicken was not chosen the most. This project is important because it helps pet owners understand how a dog’s powerful sense of smell influences behavior, appetite, and comfort, which can help keep pets healthier and safer.

This project is amazing! Really well researched and presented. I feel like I learned a lot about dogs and their preferences of smells. I will test this with my own dogs and see what they like and don’t like.
