Do You Know What's in Your Water? Water Quality and Contaminants in Public Water Sources of Yuma and San Luis Arizona

This study examined the safety and quality of drinking water in the Yuma and San Luis regions of Arizona. The research was conducted to identify differences in contaminant levels between the two areas. This study is important because concerns about water safety directly affect the health and wellbeing of the people living in Arizona. Water samples were tested using chemical test strips. The color pads on each test strip were compared to the manufacturer’s chart, and all values were recorded. Abnormal results were identified and compared between sampling sites and between both cities. Observed patterns in the data were analyzed determining potential sources of contamination The results showed that overall water quality was generally acceptable at most sites, but there were clear differences between Yuma and San Luis. Yuma samples had higher nitrate levels at one park location, consistently higher hardness and alkalinity, while San Luis samples showed lower nitrates but detectable lead at several sites. These patterns suggest localized contamination sources rather than widespread water quality issues and highlight the importance of monitoring specific locations within each city. In conclusion, this study shows that although most water quality measurements were within safe or undetectable levels, important differences existed between Yuma and San Luis. Higher nitrates and water hardness in Yuma and detectable lead at multiple San Luis sites indicate that water quality can vary significantly by location. These findings emphasize the need for continued monitoring and further investigation to identify contamination sources and ensure the safety of local communities.

The only contaminants I’d be concerned about (with a PhD in biogeochemistry) would be nitrate (high in Yuma (up to 250!), and Pb. I really hope you take those Pb results to whoever distributes the water in those areas. Pb is a potent neurotoxin.
You chose such an important topic. We can’t live without water and what is in our water really matters. I appreciated your sampling design that collected water samples at public places where members of both communities are likely to drink water.
