The project involves building a simple microbial fuel cell using mud and measuring the voltage output over time by collecting mud and conducting an experiment using a device that measures voltage levels in the mud. It enables the generation of renewable bioelectricity through microbial fuel cells, acts as a natural, abundant power source, and facilitates the study of electricity-producing bacteria in ecosystem processes.
