Digging Dirt On The Pig: The Ramifications Decomposing Pig Meat Has On The Flourishing Of Plant

This project investigated how decomposing pig meat affects plant growth, with applications in forensic botany and environmental science. Pig tissue was used because of its biological similarity to human tissue and its comparable decomposition patterns. Germinated Brassica rapa (fast plant) seeds were planted in pots containing soil with buried pig meat, while control plants were grown in soil without meat. The plants were watered regularly, and observations were recorded over several weeks. Researchers monitored plant survival, germination success, and the presence of decomposers such as maggots and pupae. Results showed that decomposing pig meat negatively affected plant growth. Although seeds initially germinated, many plants growing near the decomposing meat died shortly after maggots appeared. Data collected from the pots showed a high number of maggots and pupae in the soil containing pig meat, with some pots producing over 70 maggots. These decomposers likely damaged plant roots and bulbs while feeding on the decomposing tissue. In contrast, plants grown in soil without pig meat showed better survival and growth. These findings suggest that while decomposing animal tissue may release nutrients, it can also attract decomposers that harm plant roots and reduce plant survival, especially in confined environments such as pots. This research contributes to forensic botany by demonstrating how decomposing animal tissue can influence plant growth and soil ecosystems. Understanding these interactions may help forensic scientists interpret plant evidence in cases involving buried remains and environmental decomposition processes.
