Last year, I tested the difference between a manual water (MW) dispenser and an automatic self -cleaning water (AW) dispenser that I designed, built, and successfully installed (check Reference Slide).My results showed that the automatic water dispenser not only functioned successfully using an automatic valve and watering system, but it also produced less microbial growth than the traditional manual water dispenser. This finding was supported by at -home E. coli and coliform tests. Although the automatic water (AW) dispenser was successful during last year’s installation and testing, dirt and debris clogged the valve after three months of use. This caused the valve to malfunction and made the AW dispenser inoperable. This year, I am upgrading the project to further improve the AW dispenser by (1) adding a protective cover and (2) installing a battery -powered Yardeen Irrigation Watering System with a float ball valve. The protective cover is designed to prevent dirt, debris, and direct chicken contact from contaminating the water, helping the system remain cleaner and safer over time.
