Chaperones in the Sun: Heat Shock Protein Expansion in a Desert Survivor

The saguaro cactus is a keystone species in the Sonoran Desert, where temperatures can become extremely hot and dry. We identified putative aquaporins, ABA-receptor, dehydrins, superoxide dismutase enzymes and heat-shock genes in the saguaro genome. We wanted to understand how it survives these harsh conditions at the molecular level. We focused on a group of heat-shock proteins called HSP70s, which help protect other proteins from heat damage by acting like cellular “repair helpers.” Using genome data and bioinformatics tools, we identified multiple HSP70 genes in the saguaro and compared them to those in rice and Arabidopsis. We found that the saguaro has several well-conserved HSP70 proteins located in different parts of the cell, suggesting that it protects many cellular systems at once. Our results support the idea that heat shock proteins are an important part of how desert plants tolerate extreme heat and may help scientists develop crops that are more resilient to climate change.
