Broken String Experiment

Physics and Astronomy
Stephen Weirich

Grade:
8
Teacher:
Jomaly Cotto

The experiment tested how strong different types of string fibers are by adding weight until the string broke. The researcher compared natural fibers (cotton and wool) with synthetic fibers (acrylic and polyester). Each string was cut to the same length and tied to a bucket and a PVC pipe. Weights were added gradually to the bucket until the string snapped, and the maximum weight held was recorded. The results showed that synthetic fibers held more weight before breaking, with acrylic being the strongest and wool the weakest.

  1. Your project was very well done. I was especially impressed by how you varied your measurements and by how clearly and confidently you presented your work. Your presentation skills are excellent, and you explained the science in a very strong way.

Overall, I really enjoyed your presentation. Great job.

  2. I love how you carefully tested how much weight each material could hold and made sure everything was fair each time. You explained your results so clearly, and it is exciting to see how thoughtfully you carried out your experiment.
