Soil Erosion

Plants and the Environment

Grade:
5
Teacher:
Irene Charney

This project tests how different ground coverings affect soil erosion. Soil with grass, rocks, and no covering was tested by pouring water over it and observing how much soil washed away. The results showed that soil with grass lost the least amount of soil, helping explain how plants help prevent erosion.

  1. You are investigating a serious, real world problem that is particularly concerning in Arizona due to the monsoons – thank you. You provide a clear, detailed procedure section so this investigation can be replicated, which is a critical element of research.

  2. You did a great job showing how grass, rocks, and bare soil respond to erosion, and your three trials make your results very trustworthy. Your setup was creative, and your observations were clear and consistent. One improvement for next time would be to measure the soil loss using a scale instead of visual ratings so your data can be even more accurate. You might also try testing other erosion‑prevention methods like mulch or different plant types. Overall, this is a strong, thoughtful project and excellent work!
