How Well Do Natural Materials Filter Water?

This project tests how well different natural materials can filter dirty water. Filters made with cotton, sand, charcoal, and pebbles were compared by measuring how clear the water became and how fast it flowed. The results showed that filters with more layers made the water cleaner, but the water flowed more slowly, helping explain how real water filters work.

  1. Great work on water purification. I am glad to see how this work exposed you to the relationship between the speed of purification and the quality of water purification results.

  2. This is a very well documented project and I appreciate the clarity and specificity of the methods section. Access to clean water is a pressing real world issue and it’s great you are working to address this with an eye to affordability and access.

  3. You did an outstanding job designing and testing your water filters! Your project shows real scientific thinking as you clearly explained why clean water matters, built multiple filter designs, and compared them in a fair and organized way. Your data, graphs, and explanations show that you understand not just what happened, but also why it happened. I especially liked how you explained the role of each material and how you connected your results to real‑world water challenges.

One way to make your project even stronger next time would be to include more than one trial for each filter and show the numerical flow‑rate calculations. This would help demonstrate how consistent your results are and make your comparisons even more powerful. You might also explore additional natural materials or test how changing the order of layers affects filtration. These small additions would deepen your investigation and open up even more interesting questions.

Overall, this is a thoughtful, well‑designed project. Your curiosity and effort really shined through. Keep exploring and asking big questions.
