What Household Acid Dissolves Copper Out of Rock the Best?

This project tests which household acid works best at dissolving copper out of rock. Crushed copper-containing rocks were placed in different acid solutions, and the copper was removed using an electrowinning process. The results showed that some acids were more effective than others, with sulfuric acid dissolving and extracting the most copper.

  1. I am very impressed by how detailed and organized your experiment was. You clearly understood what you were testing and followed careful steps to make sure your results were fair. I also really liked how you repeated your trials and measured the electrodes before and after. That shows strong scientific thinking and careful experimentation. Moreover, using electrowinning in a fifth-grade project is amazing! You challenged yourself with a complex idea and explained it in a way that shows real understanding.

  3. I think I finally understand electrowinning! This is a great explanation of how copper is extracted from ore, and what electrodes, cathodes and anodes are. Great work.
