2B - Cardboard Shoes

In this engineering project, a second grade class tested whether cardboard could be used to make closed-toe shoes strong enough to wear during second grade recess. They chose this project after learning that some people do not have shoes and wanted to use recycled materials to help. The class designed and built cardboard shoes using glue, fabric, and shoelaces. The students tested the shoes by wearing them during recess. One shoe stayed together, and one shoe fell apart, showing that strong design and building methods are important. This project helped us learn about engineering, problem solving, and how recycled materials can be used to help others.

I was impressed by how you designed and built shoes from recycled cardboard and then tested them during recess. Your project showed strong problem-solving, teamwork, and care for helping others and the environment. You also learned an important lesson that engineers test, improve, and try again. Keep up the amazing work!

  2. Great idea to use an experiment to determine the best design of a shoe made from recycled materials! This is a great example of sustainability in action.

  3. What a great project – exposing kids to the reality of other people being in need, and how they might try to help solve at least one of their problems. Reusing / repurposing materials that might otherwise end up in the waste stream is a valuable lesson on its own. Designing, testing and redesigning to build a better product may inspire them to never give up!
