I bought mini mushroom growth kit containing Pearl Oyster Mushroom spawn/ Pleurotus Ostreatus. I grew a set of Pleurotus Ostreatus on polyurethane plastic which they can consume and grow on. I wanted to observed if mushrooms that grow in plastic will either grow taller/faster or shorter/slower than mushrooms that grow without plastic.

  1. This is exactly the type of science we need in environmental and plant science studies! Absolutely well done and great job at organizing your thoughts, processes, and results/findings.

    It may interest you to look at plastivore research, it’s fairly new, and gaining a lot of momentum within the realm of biotechnology, specifically within bioremediation efforts. Within the limits of your research project, it was incredibly impactful to see you working with oyster mushrooms. They’re actually known for their ability to degrade oxo-biodegradable plastic and green polyethylene which makes them extremely useful to help mitigate waste and soil remediation applications in addition to being a great protein source! While Pleurotus ostreatus isn’t a dedicated plastivore, it’s certainly a valuable tool in the battle against plastic waste!

    Fantastic project and keep it up! This type of research is just the beginning of a lot of innovations to come.
