The Effect of Solar Panel Mounting Configurations on Ambient Temperatures

Sustainability and Renewable Energy

My project is about finding the best mounting configuration (i.e. over pavement, over dirt ground, or roof mounted) for solar panels in order to reduce its contribution to the Heat Island Effect. I chose this project because it’s related to environmental engineering, and that is an interest I currently have. My overall conclusion was that placing solar panels over asphalt roads was the best way to reduce the total heat given off to surrounding areas. My project was important because solar panels are such an important source of renewable energy, but if they add to environmental heating, they aren’t providing as much of a benefit as they could, finding ways to reduce this would help to make it a better energy source.
