The Bilge: The Seasickness Solution

I have been on boats at Lake of the Ozarks and on the ocean in Florida.The boats rock back and forth, and that makes my mom very seasick sometimes. I wanted to know more to prevent seasickness and keep my mom happy. In this experiment, I learned about bilge keels and their impact on boats. I wondered ‘how do bilge keels reduce seasickness?’ I chose to test the boat without a bilge keel to first determine how much waves impact a boat. Then, I added a 16cm bilge keel to my model boat and counted the number of oscillations and time. After I completed that test, I tried an 8 cm bilge keel on my model boat and repeated my observations. I also wanted to understand how the bilge keel works in still water or a lake environment, as well as in a waterfall or ocean environment. So, I tested the boat with each bilge keel in each environment. I learned that bilge keels do reduce seasickness and stabilize the boat. The smaller bilge keel was the best. I met my objective, so now I can share my results with people like my mom. Boats with smaller keels are more stable and will help reduce effects on the body like seasickness.
