Reverse Egg Drop

The goal of my project was to test different kinds of packing materials to find out what materials are the best at protecting fragile items. I originally wanted to do this by dropping an egg inside a padded container from a tall building, but I did not have access to any tall buildings. Instead, I built a pendulum device with a weighted bucket that hits the egg container which is placed at the bottom. This simulates the impact of a drop from a great height. Instead of the egg falling and hitting the ground, the weighted bucket swings down and hits the egg. My results showed that even moderate amounts of packing materials provide good protection, and that large bubble wrap was the best of the materials we tested. My project is important because thousands of items are damaged during shipping each day.
