Comparative Analysis of Antimicrobial Efficacy: Citrus Limon (Lemon), Citrus Paradisi (Grapefruit), and Thieves Blend Essential Oils Versus Lysol, a Chemical Disinfectant Cleaner Against Bacterial Pathogens

The purpose of this project was to assess the antibacterial effectiveness of natural essential oils including lemon, grapefruit, and Thieves essential oil blend compared to Lysol, a chemical disinfectant spray, through a controlled experiment using petri dishes. With the interest of natural alternatives to chemical based disinfectants, it is important to evaluate the effectiveness of essential oils in disinfection protocols. The lemon, grapefruit and Thieves were prepared by mixing them with water. The essential oil mixture and Lysol disinfectant spray was then applied to small squares of blotter paper and placed into separate Petri dishes containing bacteria swabbed from a cell phone. A control group was included and the rest of the four petri dishes were labeled. The dependent variable measured was the bacterial population. The experiment aimed to determine whether essential oils could lead to a decrease in bacterial counts compared to the control group, as well as evaluate their ability to prevent bacterial growth altogether. While lemon and grapefruit essential oils demonstrated moderate antibacterial properties, the Thieves blend exhibited promising results in reducing bacterial growth. Notably, the Thieves blend showed comparable efficacy to Lysol Disinfectant in inhibiting bacterial growth. These findings suggest that essential oils, particularly Thieves blend, could serve as effective alternatives to chemical disinfectants in combating bacterial infections. Further research is warranted to explore the mechanisms of action and optimize the use of essential oils in disinfection protocols. This study contributes to the growing body of knowledge on the potential application of essential oils in promoting public health and environmental sustainability.

  1. This is an amazing study with a great amount of background research and rationale for this kind of work. This is essential work and a great contribution to the field of food safety. I really enjoyed looking over this study and all of the aspects that were put together. The results and data are put together and organized efficiently. Overall, amazing job with this study and keep up with this kind of work!

  2. Great job comparing natural essential oil cleaners compared to a commercially available cleaner. Looking at the bacteria and counting them is a good idea. It is interesting that there are a couple different kinds of bacteria, so that might be something interesting to look into in the future.
