A Piece of Cake! How the Ocean is a Layer Cake of Light

Energy and Change

Grade:
1
Teacher:
Kelsey Jernigan

In the fall, we read a science unit exploring the question, "Why do light and dark come and go?" To kick off the unit, there was a video where we learned that animals in the deep, dark ocean have to make their own light because the light from the sun cannot reach all the way to the bottom. This made us wonder... Why is deep water so dark? Why doesn't sunlight reach the bottom?. We conducted research and investications about light, then designed an experiment that models the layers of the ocean. We measured light opacity through each layer.
